RAJASTHAN OF THE MAHARAJAS - 15 DAYS

This is the India of the Maharajas, of the great palaces, of people of the most diverse social backgrounds, from the richest to those who belong to the humblest and most forgotten social castes, the untouchables. It is a miscellany of various humanity: women with colorful dresses, children, merchants, weavers, farmers, and small artisans from the sometimes improvised shops on the sidewalk.

DAY 01: ITALY – DELHI

Departure from Italy with a scheduled flight to Delhi. Upon arrival customs formalities, meeting with our representative, and transfer to hotel for overnight.

DAY 02: DELHI

Breakfast at the hotel and Guided tour in Italian of the old city, a charming and picturesque maze of narrow streets, divided into two parts by the Via dell’ Argento, a colorful and lively succession of shops and bazaars. In the same area, you can visit the Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in the world, built-in 1650. Afternoon visit of New Delhi with its most important monuments: the Qutub Minar complex, the Mausoleum of Emperor Humayun, and the government buildings from the colonial era in front of the India Gate. DAY 03: DELHI – MANDAWA (285 km. 7 hours approx)

Breakfast at the hotel and around 08:30 transfer to Mandawa, a town founded in the 18th century and fortified by some rich merchant families, Mandawa is famous for its Havelis, merchants’ houses richly frescoed with curious naive paintings and trompe-l motifs ‘oil. Arrive in Mandawa and check in at the hotel. Afternoon visits to the town famous for the ancient Haweli painted in the Shekawati style. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 04: MANDAWA – BIKANER (190 km. 4 hours approx)

Breakfast at the hotel and around 08:30 departure for Bikaner by private car, which is located in the great Tar desert. Upon arrival check-in at the hotel and visit the Junagarh Fort and its museum. The ancient capital, surrounded by walls, founded in 1488 by Rao Bikaji, was located on an ancient caravan route in medieval times. The old city is enclosed within the city walls, in the southeast of the city and includes the colorful local bazaars. Junagarh Fort was built by Raja Raj Sin, who reigned from 1571 to 1611 and was one of the army commanders of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The fort, counted among the most beautiful fortresses in the world, is surrounded by a large moat, the main entrance is Suraj Pol (Sun gate), and the inner chapel is a majestic Hindu temple “Har Mandir”, whose royal family celebrated the births and marriages of their members. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 05: BIKANER – JAISALMER (330 km. 7 hours approx)

Breakfast at the hotel and around 08:00 departure for Jaisalmer, crossing almost all of the Tar desert, on the border with Pakistan. Jaisalmer is probably the most fascinating destination of the entire trip. Stop at Fort Pokaran (free lunch). Afternoon planned panoramic tour of the city with a stop in Badabagh to visit the cenotaphs of the royal family. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 06: JAISALMER

Breakfast at the hotel and full day dedicated to visiting the fortified city, founded in 1156 and for a long time represented one of the main caravan cities along the prestigious Silk Road, also for this reason it was once called the “desert island”, entirely carved in the yellow sandstone that gives it the name of “City of Gold”, through its maze of ancient alleys, the splendid Jainist temples and the Haweli. The population has preserved the ancient traditions and continues to live the usual life. Jaisalmer’s origins date back to the 12th century, when it was founded by Rawal Jaisal, a Rajput chief who claimed to be a descendant of the moon. L’ Ancient prosperity of the princes and merchants of Jaisalmer is witnessed by the beautifully carved and decorated wooden and yellow-gold sandstone palaces and buildings. The visit of the city includes the various temples, including the 2 Jain temples dating back to 1100. DAY 07: JAISALMER – JODHPUR (290 km. 6 hours approx)

DAY 08: JODHPUR – RANAKPUR – UDAIPUR (270 Km. 7 hours approx)

Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Udaipur, the most romantic city of Rajasthan. On the way stop to visit the magnificent Jain temple in Ranakpur, carved in white marble is one of the five holiest places for the Jain religion and is surrounded by walls. There are 4 facades surrounding the central temple “Chumukha” which is dedicated to Adinathji and contains a total of 29 walls and 1444 pillars all finely carved and all in different ways. It is just such an extraordinary example of the genius of architecture that wants to amaze and leave you mesmerized in awe. Continue to Udaipur, and upon arrival accommodation in a hotel for dinner and overnight. 

DAY 09: UDAIPUR

Breakfast at the hotel and visit to the “City of Dawn” was founded in 1567, when Maharaja Udai Singh, tired of the repeated attacks on Chittor, the old Mewar capital, had a wise old man indicate a safe place for his new capital. DAY 10 : UDAIPUR – CHITTORGARH – PUSHKAR (303 km. 6 hours approx)

After breakfast, transfer to Pushkar, a famous town in Rajasthan, best known for its “camel fair”, held in November. Stop for the visit of Chittorgarh : fortified city witness of one of the most glorious periods of the chivalric history of Rajasthan, continuation to Pushkar. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. 

DAY 11: JODHPUR – JAIPUR (330 Km. 6 hours approximately)

After breakfast transfer to Jaipur, known as the “Pink City”. Afternoon visits the famous monkey temple (Galta Ji Mandir or simply the Monkeys temple). Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 12: JAIPUR

Breakfast at the hotel and a whole day dedicated to visiting the “pink city”, the capital of Rajasthan, a first-rate commercial and tourist hub, today a center of at least 1,300,000 people, located in a semi-desert area. Jaipur is striking because it is architecturally ordered according to precise geometries. It is famous for its pink sandstone buildings, but it seems that the name derives from an episode of 1876, when Jaipur was repainted pink for the visit of the Prince of Wales. The first visit will be made to the Amber Fort, 11 km. from Jaipur. The last part of the climb to the Fort is covered on the back of placid elephants to better enter the spirit of the places. Inside the walls you can visit palaces and pavilions of refined beauty and the small temple of the Goddess Kali. Then visit the city proper: the Observatory, full of exceptionally large instruments and where the “Sancrat” (the Prince of the Sundial), a 90-foot-tall gnomon, is found; to the Palazzo del Vento, which stands on one of the main streets of the city, a curious elaborate and imaginative palace but at the same time a clear example of oriental art also built with “desert stone”; and finally visit the Maharaja’s Palace dating back to 1570. DAY 13: JAIPUR – FATEHPUR SIKRI – AGRA (232 km. 5 hours approx)

After breakfast and at 08:00 depart for Agra, stopping at Fatehpur Sikri to visit the deserted 16th century city, abandoned after only 14 years of its construction, with beautiful red sandstone buildings. Arrival in Agra and check-in at the hotel, afternoon visit the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, a magnificent marble dream that rises in the middle of a lush garden like a pearl in a kind of immaculate landscape. Its beauty transcends all description, built by the Mughal Emperor Shahjehan in 1631 in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died during the birth of his 14th son after 17 years of marriage. To erect the monument, precious stones of all kinds, pearls, corals were collected and 20,000 of the best craftsmen were called from all over the kingdom. which took 22 years to complete this masterpiece. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

 

DAY 14: AGRA – DELHI (215 km. 5 hours approx)

After breakfast in the morning visit the Agra Fort, the ancient imperial residence of the emperor of the Mughal dynasty Shah Jahan. At noon departure for Delhi, but on the way we stop in Sikandra to visit the tomb of Akbar, the emperor of the Mughal dynasty who built the city of Fatehpur Sikri. Arrival in Delhi and dinner in a local restaurant near the airport. After dinner transfer to the international airport.

 

DAY 15: DELHI – ITALY

Departure with a scheduled flight to Italy and overnight on board. On the early morning arrival in Italy.
