Breakfast at the hotel and whole day dedicated to visiting the “pink city”, the capital of Rajasthan, a first-rate commercial and tourist hub, today a center of at least 1,300,000 people, located in a semi-desert area. Jaipur is striking because it is architecturally ordered according to precise geometries. It is famous for its pink sandstone buildings, but it seems that the name derives from an episode of 1876, when Jaipur was repainted pink for the visit of the Prince of Wales. The first visit will be made to the Amber Fort, 11 km. from Jaipur. The last part of the climb to the Fort is covered on the back of placid elephants to better enter the spirit of the place. Inside the walls you can visit palaces and pavilions of refined beauty and the small temple of the Goddess Kali. Then visit the city proper: the Observatory, full of exceptionally large instruments and where the “Sancrat” (the Prince of the Sundial), a 90-foot-tall gnomon, is found; to the Palazzo del Vento, which stands on one of the main streets of the city, a curious elaborate and imaginative palace but at the same time a clear example of oriental art also built with “desert stone”; and finally visit the Maharaja’s Palace dating back to 1570. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. a curious elaborate and imaginative palace but at the same time a clear example of oriental art also built with “desert stone”; and finally visit the Maharaja’s Palace dating back to 1570.
